Arsenal keen on signing Anthony Gordon from Newcastle
Arsenal have shortlisted Newcastle United winger Anthony Gordon among their list of potential left-wing targets for next summer, according to The Athletic.
The 25-year-old has enjoyed a meteoric rise since joining Newcastle in January 2023, playing an instrumental role in the Magpies’ surge in recent seasons, during which they’ve twice qualified for the UEFA Champions League, won the Carabao Cup, and pitched their tent among the big sides despite their recent slump.
He has also achieved individual success, providing 67 goal contributions in 152 appearances for the Tyneside club while also earning 17 international caps for England.
While this is his most prolific campaign in the top flight, with his 12 goal contributions in 12 Champions League games making rounds, his overall form in the Premier League have been inconsistent. In 26 games, he has netted only six goals and provided two assists, with that drop in form leading to speculation about his future and his desire to continue at the club.
Now, according to The Athletic, Gordon’s departure from St James’ Park looks increasingly likely next summer, with Arsenal now showing interest.
The report adds that the Gunners are looking to sign a new left-winger in the summer and have shortlisted the Englishman among their targets, having been tracking him in recent seasons.
The England international’s pace and ability to play in different positions across the attack are viewed as ‘big assets’ by the North London club, although Newcastle’s valuation of around £80m could be an obstacle, according to the report.
Audacious swoop
However, Arsenal are not alone in the race, as The Athletic claims that Premier League rivals Chelsea and Bundesliga giants Bayern Munich are also interested in signing the England international next summer.
Arsenal spent heavily to reinforce their attack next summer, with the arrivals of Noni Madueke, Eberechi Eze and Viktor Gyökeres.
However, the trio already have specialised roles: Gyökeres has netted 18 goals in all competitions, while Eze is more effective playing through the middle as an attacking midfielder. Madueke, on the other hand, has played 191 times as a right winger in his career compared to just 17 on the left, making him better suited as a competitor for Bukayo Saka.
Leandro Trossard and Gabriel Martinelli are Mikel Arteta’s natural left-wing options. Still, there are speculations about at least one of the duo potentially departing the Emirates Stadium in the summer.
Should any of them depart, a move for Gordon could hand Arteta a more prolific, direct, and speedy winger on the left who can offer a threat similar to Saka’s on the right.
