Arsenal eye move to sign Man City’s Bernardo Silva
Arsenal are reportedly interested in signing Manchester City midfielder Bernardo Silva, as per ESPN Brazil.
Since moving to the Etihad Stadium from AS Monaco, the 31-year-old has enjoyed great success over the years, winning six Premier League titles, a Champions League trophy, and several other major cup competitions.
This season, the Portuguese has continued to showcase his qualities, guiding his side to mount another title charge. In 45 appearances across all competitions, he has made eight goal contributions.
Silva even displayed an excellent performance vs Mikel Arteta’s side last weekend, where the Citizens won the game 2-1 courtesy of Rayan Cherki and Erling Haaland’s goals.
However, with the player set to leave for free at the end of this campaign, speculation surrounding his future has started emerging. ESPN Brazil report that Arsenal have expressed their interest in Silva and have been monitoring his situation closely before making a potential swoop.
Arteta already knows the Portuguese very well, having previously worked as Pep Guardiola’s assistant at Man City. However, signing Silva won’t be straightforward for Arsenal as Barcelona are also in this race.
Man City have been battling with Arsenal for the Premier League title in recent years, so Silva doesn’t want to move to the Emirates Stadium.
Silva to Arsenal
Silva believes that he can still play at the highest level for a few more years. So, he doesn’t want to move to the Middle East. The Man City star wants to return to his boyhood club, SL Benfica, one day, but doesn’t want to join them this summer. As a result, Barcelona are currently the frontrunners in this race.
Bernardo Silva started his career as a left-footed right winger, but has lost some of his pace with age. As a result, he now operates more as a midfielder. The former Monaco star is technically sound and possesses the necessary attributes to flourish in Arteta’s system.
Therefore, Silva, valued at around £23m by Transfermarkt, would have been a great coup for Arsenal had they managed to secure his service.
Meanwhile, Arsenal are set to face Newcastle United in the Premier League this weekend before taking on Atletico Madrid in the Champions League semi-final first leg next week.
