Arsenal ready to battle Bayern to sign Anthony Gordon
Arsenal are in battle with Bayern Munich over a deal to sign Newcastle United winger Anthony Gordon next summer, according to Fichajes.
The England international is set to become one of the most highly sought-after players in the upcoming summer transfer window and will most likely cost significantly more than his £52m Transfermarkt valuation.
During his stint with Everton, the winger’s displays put him on the radar of several clubs before Newcastle won the race for his signature in January 2023.
Following his switch to St James’ Park, the versatile winger has experienced rapid growth both collectively and individually, earning 17 England caps while also helping the club end their 70-year wait for silverware with last season’s Carabao Cup success.
Despite Newcastle’s difficulties this campaign, he has remained a key influence, recording 22 goal contributions, with a notable impact in the Champions League, where he has scored 10 times and provided two assists in 12 appearances, including a hat-trick against Qarabag – becoming only the third Newcastle player to achieve that feat in the competition and the first to do so in the knockout rounds.
Gordon is set to become the subject of keen interest again this summer, as Fichajes reports that Arsenal and Bayern Munich are set to battle to sign the 25-year-old.
The Gunners believe the Englishman’s qualities, including his ability to play in different positions and his intensity, would instantly elevate Mikel Arteta’s attack, according to the report.
Fierce battle
On the other hand, the Gunners face strong competition from Bayern, as a Spanish outlet claims that the Bundesliga giants believe the winger’s qualities align with the attacking profile Vincent Kompany is looking to incorporate at the club.
However, in a boost to Arsenal, a recent report from The Sun claims that the Premier League leaders hold an advantage in the race for Gordon, as the winger prefers a move to London over other cities, with Gabriel Martinelli or Leandro Trossard expected to depart to make room.
Following three straight domestic defeats, Arsenal now head into a tense closing stretch, with the recent loss to Bournemouth reducing their advantage to six points over second-placed Manchester City, who still hold a game in hand.
Arsenal will head into this game in confidence, not just from their qualification to the UEFA Champions League semi-finals but also from their strong form in recent games against the Cityzens, where they remain unbeaten in their last five games after previously losing 12 in a row.
