Arsenal eyeing bargain swoop for Celta Vigo right-back Oscar Mingueza
Arsenal are plotting a swoop to sign Celta Vigo right-back Oscar Mingueza to replace Ben White next summer, according to Fichajes.
After joining Barcelona’s La Masia setup in 2007, Mingueza spent more than a decade rising through the ranks before making his senior debut in November 2020, in a 4–0 Champions League victory over Dynamo Kyiv.
Just five days later, he made his La Liga debut, once again in a 4–0 win, this time against Osasuna, and went on to make 39 appearances in his debut season, scoring twice and adding three assists.
During the 2021/22 campaign, opportunities became limited as he struggled to secure a regular role under Ronald Koeman and Xavi, starting only nine league games and 2 Champions League games.
After that season, he left the Nou Camp for Celta de Vigo, where he has since become an important figure, making 139 appearances and contributing 7 goals and 15 assists.
Now, according to Fichajes, Arsenal are leading the race to sign Mingueza as a free agent when his contract expires at the end of the season.
Arteta impressed by Mingueza
With Ben White expected to depart the Emirates Stadium, the Gunners view the 26-year-old as an ideal option to replace the Englishman, with Mikel Arteta particularly impressed by his ability to play in different positions, according to the report.
However, the report adds that the North Londoners face stern competition from Premier League rivals Manchester City, Liverpool, Newcastle United, Aston Villa, Everton, and Tottenham Hotspur, who have been keeping tabs on his performances ahead of a possible summer swoop.
Although White has started the last four games for Arsenal in all competitions and is also in contention to start at right-back in the UEFA Champions League second-leg clash against Sporting, the Englishman has not been at his marauding best and understandably so due to the incessant injuries incurred since the start of the season.
In addition, Jurrien Timber, who has been the manager’s first-choice option at right back before his injury, is tipped to return to the starting lineup after he regains full fitness, further putting White’s future in doubt.
With the 28-year-old expected to leave at the end of the season, Mingueza would be a suitable replacement — not only for his experience and ability to slot into multiple roles across the backline but also for financial reasons, as Arsenal could sign him on a free rather than pay above his £15m Transfermarkt valuation.
