Sandro Tonali

Arsenal are reportedly interested in signing Newcastle United midfielder Sandro Tonali, as per Spanish outlet Fichajes.

The Gunners enjoyed a stellar run for much of the season, but have shown a dip in form in recent weeks. Following back-to-back defeats against Manchester City and Southampton in the Carabao Cup final and FA Cup quarter-final, respectively, Mikel Arteta’s side returned to winning ways by defeating Sporting CP in the Champions League quarter-final first leg last week.

They displayed an average performance in this game, but eventually won courtesy of Kai Havertz’s late winner, and David Raya was the player of the match.

However, having been beaten 2-1 by AFC Bournemouth in the Premier League last weekend, Arsenal have come under significant pressure.

The North London club are still at the top of the Premier League table with 70 points from 32 matches. But Following Manchester City’s 3-0 victory over Chelsea, they are currently just six points behind, having played one game less.

Next weekend, Arsenal are set to face the Citizens at the Etihad Stadium after taking on Sporting in the Champions League quarter-final second leg.

Meanwhile, the Gunners have already started exploring options to add more firepower this summer to continue the momentum next campaign.

Tonali to Arsenal

Now, Fichajes state that Arsenal are interested in bolstering the engine room and have identified Tonali as an ‘ideal’ option after being impressed by his performances at St James’ Park.

However, the Emirates club will have to overcome stiff competition to seal the deal as Manchester United and Manchester City are also plotting a swoop.

With the Italian’s existing deal set to run until 2028, Newcastle want around £100m to sell him, and they want to conclude the sale early in the summer window.

The 25-year-old is an experienced player and has proven his worth in the Premier League in recent years. Moreover, he has established himself as a key starter in the Italian national team’s starting line-up.

Arsenal are seemingly willing to replace Christian Norgaard, who has struggled to find his feet at the Emirates Stadium since joining from Brentford last summer.

It is going to be interesting to see whether the North London club eventually make a formal proposal to sign Tonali.
