Arsenal plotting swoop to sign Leon Goretzka
Arsenal are plotting a swoop to sign Bayern Munich midfielder Leon Goretzka on a free transfer next summer, according to Fussballdaten.
Goretzka made the move to Allianz Arena from Schalke in the summer of 2018 and has since become a regular presence in the side. Across all competitions, the German midfielder, valued at £13m by Transfermarkt, has made 301 appearances, contributing 48 goals and 50 assists, while playing a role in one of the club’s most dominant periods.
During his eight-year spell in Munich, he has amassed an impressive collection of honours, helping Bayern secure six Bundesliga titles, three German Super Cups, two domestic cup trophies, and triumphs in the UEFA Champions League and the UEFA Super Cup.
Despite featuring regularly in league matches, the midfielder is not viewed as a key figure in the side. He has played just 173 minutes in Bayern’s UEFA Champions League campaign, did not start any of the group-stage games, and his only start came in the second leg of the round of 16 against Atalanta – a match that had already been effectively decided after the 6-1 first-leg win.
It appears Bayern are resolved to his departure as a free agent, with Fussballdaten reporting that several clubs, including Arsenal, are positioning themselves as a potential destination for Goretzka next summer.
According to the report, the Gunners’ boss Mikel Arteta wants to add a player with physical and technical qualities to reinforce his midfield, and the 31-year-old is at the top of his list for that role.
Goretzka to Arsenal
In a boost to the North London club, the report adds that the Premier League is the German international’s preferred destination, and Arsenal are now offering him a key role in the squad to convince him.
However, the Premier League leaders face stern competition for his signature from Manchester United, Atletico Madrid, Inter Milan, Juventus, and Saudi Pro League side Al Hilal, all keen to sign the experienced midfielder next summer, Fussballdaten adds.
Arteta already has a wealth of midfield options available to him, including Declan Rice, Martin Zubimendi, Martin Ødegaard, Christian Nørgaard, Mikel Merino, and Ethan Nwaneri, who is currently on loan at Marseille.
However, none quite possesses the experience at the highest stage, leadership qualities, and top-flight success that Goretzka does.
A move for a midfielder of his qualities on a bargain free transfer would be a shrewd piece of business by Arsenal to maintain their dominance beyond this season.
