Arsenal’s Martin Zubimendi withdraws from Spain squad due to injury

Martin Zubimendi has become the 10th Arsenal player to pull out from international duty after Spain confirmed the midfielder has left camp with a knee issue.
The 27-year-old — who joined Arsenal from Real Sociedad last summer for £60m — has played 3,575 minutes of football across all competitions, the most of any outfield player for the Gunners this season.
The midfielder came on for Rodri for the final 13 minutes, as goals from Mikel Oyarzabal — who struck twice — and Víctor Muñoz secured a comfortable 3-0 victory for Spain over Serbia.
He had been expected to feature in Tuesday’s friendly against Egypt but has now returned to North London for further checks.
In a statement released on Sunday, the Royal Spanish Football Federation confirmed that Zubimendi has been withdrawn from Luis de la Fuente’s squad due to a knee injury and that he has been sent back to Arsenal to avoid any further setbacks.
Blow
The statement reads: ‘Martin Zubimendi has withdrawn from the Spanish national team camp due to discomfort in his right knee. To avoid any risk and to protect the player’s health, he has been removed from the squad.
‘Arsenal FC’s medical staff have been informed of the situation. ‘
Zubimendi’s withdrawal adds to what has become a difficult international break for Mikel Arteta, with the Spaniard now the tenth Arsenal player to pull out of national team duty after Piero Hincapié exited the Ecuador national football team squad earlier on Sunday.
At the same time, Declan Rice, Bukayo Saka and Noni Madueke — the latter picking up a concerning knee injury in Friday’s 1–1 draw with Uruguay — were among eight players to leave the England national football team camp on Saturday evening.
Eberechi Eze had already withdrawn from Three Lions duty due to a calf problem, while Gabriel Magalhães, Leandro Trossard, William Saliba and Jurriën Timber did not feature for their respective countries.
Martin Ødegaard was also absent from the Norway national football team squad due to a knee issue, though he could return after the break. At the same time, Mikel Merino remains weeks away from a comeback following foot surgery.
