Arsenal identify Elliot Anderson, Sandro Tonali & Adam Wharton as midfield targets for next summer

Arsenal are looking to reinforce their midfield ranks and have earmarked Nottingham Forest’s Elliot Anderson and Newcastle United’s Sandro Tonali as possible options, according to Sky Sports.

The Gunners were among the most ambitious sides in the last summer transfer window, spending heavily to add depth and reinforce key positions.

In midfield, Martin Zubimendi, Christian Nørgaard, and Eberechi Eze were signed, and the trio has shown good value for money, although Nørgaard has played a reduced role due to the strong form of the first-choice options.

The former Brentford man has proved reliable whenever called upon and even slotted seamlessly into centre-back during an injury-hit festive period.

However, the Gunners’ need for quality depth became clear when Mikel Merino suffered a season-ending injury, prompting the club to scour the market for options.

While a move did not materialise, they remain keen on bolstering the position, and options are already being explored as the summer transfer window approaches.

One of the midfield options Arsenal are looking at is Forest’s Anderson, according to Sky Sports, which reports that the England international is attracting interest from several Premier League clubs, including the Gunners.

High-level targets

The report adds that the Premier League leaders are looking to sign a top midfielder next summer, and the 23-year-old is ‘admired’ by the club as a viable option for that role, although they’ll have to battle with Manchester City and Manchester United.

Sky Sports adds that Arsenal also have Newcastle talisman Tonali high on their list of midfield targets, having previously been linked with a move for the Italian in recent months.

While they are not under financial constraints regarding Profit and Sustainability Rules (PSR), the North Londoners are expected to sanction several outgoings to recoup considerable funds for their transfer activities next summer, according to the report.

The Gunners have also been credited with an interest in Crystal Palace star Adam Wharton, with the 22-year-old open to joining a Champions League club next season, amid interest from Mikel Arteta’s side, Sky Sports adds.

Following big-money moves for the likes of Moises Caicedo and Declan Rice in recent seasons, the report claims that a move for Anderson and Tonali won’t come cheaply, with the current market valuation of midfielders of their quality placed at around £100m.

Arsenal will hope to bounce back from their disappointing Carabao Cup final loss to City when they travel to St Mary’s Stadium to face Championship side Southampton in the quarter-finals of the FA Cup after the international break.
