Arsenal made last-gasp attempt to sign Leon Goretzka

By on February 7, 2026

Arsenal reportedly made a last-gasp attempt to sign Bayern Munich midfielder Leon Goretzka in the winter window, as per a recent German report.

After running his contract down with Schalke, the 31-year-old moved to the Allianz Arena as a free agent back in 2018. The midfielder has enjoyed great success at the Bavarian club over the years, winning numerous Bundesliga titles, a Champions League trophy, and several other major cup competitions.

However, Goretzka is set to leave Bayern Munich as a free agent at the end of this season. Now, as per a recent report (via the Daily Mail), Arsenal wanted to sign a new midfielder late in the winter window and made a last-gasp attempt to sign Goretzka.

However, the German international didn’t want to leave Bayern Munich in mid-season, so a move eventually didn’t come to fruition.

Following Mikel Merino’s recent serious injury, Arsenal reportedly wanted a new midfielder, and Newcastle United star Sandro Tonali was heavily linked with a move.

In the end, Mikel Arteta’s side decided not to sign anyone, and the Spanish boss has been left with Declan Rice, Martin Zubimendi, and Christian Norgaard as the midfield options.

The report state that although Arsenal have failed to sign Goretzka in mid-season, they could make a move to sign him as a free agent at the end of this season.

Goretzka to Arsenal

However, they will have to overcome stiff competition as AC Milan, Napoli, Juventus, Tottenham Hotspur, and Atletico Madrid are also interested in him, with the player convinced his style is perfect for the Premier League.

Goretzka is an energetic box-to-box midfielder and has been playing in the double midfield pivot at Bayern Munich. Moreover, he can provide cover in the CAM role if needed.

He, valued at around £13m by Transfermarkt, has showcased his qualities at the highest level in recent years and has even been a key player for the Germany national team.

So, he might be a shrewd acquisition for Arsenal to add depth to the midfield department should they sign him. However, it is going to be interesting to see whether the North London club eventually make a concrete approach to secure his services next summer.
