Arsenal hold talks to sign Atletico Madrid star Alvarez

By on January 23, 2026

Arsenal have reportedly held talks to sign Atletico Madrid centre-forward Julian Alvarez, as per TEAMtalk.

After moving to the Estadio Metropolitano from Manchester City in 2024, the 25-year-old enjoyed a stellar debut campaign, scoring 29 goals and registering seven assists across all competitions.

However, Diego Simeone has failed to bring the best out of the Argentinian international thus far this season. Although he has scored 16 goal contributions across all competitions, he has netted only once in the last 11 games.

Now, TEAMtalk claim that Alvarez has become frustrated with his current situation at Atletico Madrid and could be open to leaving at the end of this season.

Barcelona have registered their interest in signing the South American, looking to take advantage of his current situation. However, they might find it difficult to lure him to Camp Nou this year due to their financial difficulties.

As a result, intermediaries connected to the player have started exploring alternative options. Paris Saint-Germain are also interested in him, but he might decide to return to the Premier League.

Arsenal have held a long-standing interest in him since his River Plate days and have been keeping a close eye on his current situation. If Alvarez were to return to England, he wants to play in London, and Arsenal have already held talks over this deal.

However, the report state that Chelsea are also in this race and have made contact over this deal. Meaning, the forward isn’t short of potential suitors at the moment.

The Gunners decided to reinforce the centre-forward position by purchasing Viktor Gyokeres last summer. But he has found it difficult to adapt to the Premier League’s physicality.

Alvarez is a top-class player and helped Argentina win the World Cup in 2022. Moreover, he enjoyed great success in England with Man City, winning every possible major competition.

The 25-year-old is currently at the prime stage of his career and might be able to regain his form in an attacking team like Arsenal. So, he would be a great coup for Mikel Arteta’s side should they purchase him.

However, it is going to be interesting to see whether the North London club eventually make a concrete approach to secure his services.
