Arsenal plot ambitious swoop to sign Newcastle’s Gordon
Arsenal are reportedly planning to launch an ambitious swoop to sign Newcastle United forward Anthony Gordon, as per the Evening Standard.
After moving to St James’ Park from Everton in January 2023, the 24-year-old initially took time to settle into his new surroundings before enjoying a stellar 2023/24 campaign. In 35 Premier League appearances, he scored 11 goals and registered 10 assists.
Following Alexander Isak’s move to Liverpool last summer, Gordon has now established himself as the main man in Eddie Howe’s starting line-up this campaign.
He has made 12 goal contributions across all competitions thus far, helping his side mount a top-four charge. The Magpies are currently sixth in the Premier League table with 32 points from 21 matches, sitting only three points behind fourth-placed Liverpool.
Now, the Evening Standard report that Arsenal are planning to reinforce the left flank this year and have earmarked Gordon as a serious option. Mikel Arteta’s side hold a long-standing interest in the Newcastle star as they were interested in him last summer as well.
However, purchasing the Englishman won’t be straightforward as the Magpies wouldn’t want to let their key player leave next summer, let alone in mid-season.
Therefore, the report claim that Arsenal have lined up Nico Williams as a potential alternative option should they eventually fail to lure Gordon, valued at around £52m by Transfermarkt, to the Emirates Stadium.
Gordon to Arsenal
Gordon is a left-winger by trait, and having showcased his qualities in the Premier League in recent years, he has secured his place in the England national team.
Arsenal currently have Gabriel Martinelli and Leandro Trossard as specialist left-wing options. However, Martinelli hasn’t been able to perform at his best in the Premier League in recent seasons.
On the other hand, Trossard is edging closer towards the twilight of his career, and his existing deal is set to expire at the end of next season. So, Arsenal have seemingly started exploring options to strengthen the LW position.
Gordon is a Premier League-proven player and is still very young. So, he would be a great coup for Arsenal should they purchase him. However, it remains to be seen whether the North London club will eventually manage to secure his services.
