Mikel Arteta keen on signing Arda Guler at Arsenal
Mikel Arteta is reportedly keen on signing Real Madrid midfielder Arda Guler at Arsenal, as per a recent report.
The Gunners decided to sign Eberechi Eze from Crystal Palace last summer to support Martin Odegaard. The Englishman even displayed impressive performances amid the Norwegian’s injury absence this term, making eight goal contributions across all competitions.
However, he hasn’t started a league game since the hard-fought victory over bottom-side Wolverhampton Wanderers last month. Ethan Nwaneri is another option Arteta currently has at his disposal to deploy in the CAM role.
However, the Englishman is very young and has failed to find regular game time thus far this season. So, it appears the Spanish boss is keen on signing a new creative midfielder.
As per a recent report (via TEAMtalk), Arteta has requested the Gunners’ hierarchy to sign Guler as he feels the Real Madrid star would be an ‘ideal’ option to play in his system.
Having splashed big money last summer, Arsenal can’t break the bank once again in this winter transfer window. So, they are planning to sign the Turkish international on a loan deal this month with an obligation to make the move permanent for a fee of around £78m next summer.
Guler was an internal part of Xabi Alonso’s starting line-up earlier this season, but he has lost his importance in recent weeks. So, speculation surrounding his future has started emerging.
Guler to Arsenal
Arsenal hold a long-standing interest in the 20-year-old as they have been linked with him since his Fenerbahce days. He is a left-footed creative midfielder by trait, like Odegaard, but is also comfortable in the box-to-box role. Furthermore, he can provide cover on the right flank if needed.
He is technically sound, can play threading passes between the lines, is efficient in taking set-pieces, has an eye for scoring goals from distance, and is also excellent at playing long passes.
The former Fenerbahce star is a top-class player and would be a great coup for Arsenal should they purchase him. However, it is going to be interesting to see whether the North London club eventually make a concrete approach to lure him to the Emirates Stadium before the February 2nd transfer deadline.
