Arsenal reportedly remain keen on signing Athletic Club star Nico Williams, as per Spanish outlet Fichajes.

Following an inconsistent start to this season, the Gunners improved massively and established a healthy lead at the top of the Premier League table.

However, they have failed to continue the momentum amid recent injury problems, and the gap at the top has now reduced to just two points, with Manchester City sitting second.

Mikel Arteta’s side even defeated bottom-side Wolves, who have accumulated only two points thus far this season, courtesy of a stoppage-time winner. Nevertheless, they have been displaying impressive performances in the Champions League, winning all six games.

On the other hand, they have reached the quarter-final of the Carabao Cup, and the FA Cup is set to commence from next month. So, Arsenal are on course to challenge on all fronts this season.

Meanwhile, with the January transfer window just less than two weeks away, the rumour mill has started linking numerous players with a move to the Emirates Stadium in recent weeks.

Now, Fichajes state that Arsenal have been ‘actively’ pursuing Williams over the last few years as they see him as an ‘ideal’ option to strengthen the attacking department.

Williams to Arsenal

Despite recently signing a fresh term until 2035 with the Basque club, he is likely to leave at the end of this season, with the player having a £83m release clause.

However, Williams is keen on joining Real Madrid if he were to leave San Mamés Stadium, and Los Blancos have started exploring options as a potential replacement for Vinicius Junior.

The 23-year-old has established himself as one of the best forwards in La Liga, having displayed impressive performances in recent years. Moreover, he has secured his place in Luis De La Fuente’s Spanish national team’s starting line-up.

Williams is a left-winger by trait but is also comfortable on the opposite side. He is a highly talented player and could become world-class in the future, so he would be a great coup for Arsenal should they purchase him.

However, it is going to be interesting to see whether the North London club eventually make a concrete approach to lure him to the Emirates Stadium next year.
