Arsenal told Jurrien Timber is ‘best’ fullback in the PL
Former midfielder turned pundit Owen Hargreaves has said that Arsenal star Jurrien Timber is the ‘best’ fullback in the Premier League.
After moving to the Emirates Stadium from Ajax Amsterdam, the Dutchman failed to serve his new club properly in his debut campaign due to a serious knee injury.
However, since returning to full fitness, he has established himself as an undisputed starter in Mikel Arteta’s starting line-up. The defender played as a centre-back for the Eredivisie giants, but Arteta has molded him into a fullback. He has been playing as a right-back, but has provided cover on the opposite side as well.
In 48 appearances across all competitions, Timber made six goal contributions last term and kept seven clean sheets in the Premier League. This season, he has already made five goal contributions in 20 appearances in all tournaments, keeping six clean sheets.
Having showcased his qualities in the Premier League, the 24-year-old has established himself as a key player in Ronald Koeman’s Netherlands national team.
On Premier League production(via Metro), Hargreaves was asked whether Timber can provide cover in the centre-back position amid William Saliba, Gabriel Magalhaes, and Cristhian Mosquera’s injury absence. He says that Timber is the ‘best’ fullback in the Premier League and can surely play in the centre-back role.
Pundit lauds Timber
Although he isn’t the tallest of players, he has a good personality and is very strong. However, if Arteta feels Timber wouldn’t be the right option for the central role, Ben White can also play there.
Hargreaves said:
“Timber, I think is the best full-back in the Premier League this season, and I’m sure he can pop in there. He maybe not be physically the size of Saliba and Gabriel but he’s got proper personality, he’s as strong as anything, and obviously Ben White can play in there.”
Gabriel sustained a muscular problem during his international duty with Brazil and is set to remain sidelined over the coming weeks. On the other hand, Mosquera picked up an injury vs Brentford in midweek.
Saliba, meanwhile, sustained his problem in training, and his issue is reportedly nothing serious, but he has been out over the last two games.
Now, Arsenal will face off against Aston Villa in the Premier League before taking on Club Brugge in the Champions League next week, and both are away fixtures.
