Arsenal register interest in signing Rodrigo Mendoza
Arsenal are reportedly interested in signing Elche midfielder Rodrigo Mendoza, as per Caught Offside.
Mikel Arteta became the Gunners’ boss back in 2019 and helped them win the FA Cup immediately. However, they were in a difficult state and had been absent from the Champions League for several years.
The Spanish boss has managed to guide Arsenal to become a Premier League title challenger over the years, but has failed to help them win any major competitions since the FA Cup triumph, finishing second in the last three consecutive Premier League campaigns.
This season, with Liverpool and Manchester City struggling, Arsenal have a very good opportunity to finally become the English champions. They have even been displaying impressive performances, sitting at the top of the Premier League table with 29 points from 12 matches.
Arsenal spent big money in the last transfer window to hand Arteta the necessary tools to achieve success this season. So, they have depth in almost every area of the squad.
Still, Caught Offside claim that Arsenal remain active in the market to reinforce the squad further and have identified Mendoza as a serious target. The Gunners ‘really like’ the midfielder after monitoring his development closely over the last few years.
Although the 20-year-old has a contract until 2028 with Elche, he has a £17m release clause. So, Arsenal can manage to secure his service in a bargain deal should they eventually make a concrete approach.
Mendoza to Arsenal
However, the report state that purchasing the youngster won’t be straightforward for Arsenal as Real Madrid, Atletico Madrid, and Sevilla are also interested in him, having been impressed by his performances.
Mendoza is a box-to-box midfielder by trait and is a U21 Spanish international. He has been playing as a rotational option in La Liga this season, scoring twice in six starts across all competitions.
The Elche star is a highly talented player and could become a top-class midfielder in the future. So, he might be a shrewd acquisition for Arsenal with a view to the long-term future should they purchase him.
However, having already got Declan Rice, Mikel Merino, Martin Zubimendi, and Christian Norgaard, Arsenal don’t need a new midfielder in the first team squad unless anyone leaves.
