Arsenal keen on signing FC Porto star Samu Aghehowa
Arsenal are reportedly keen on signing FC Porto striker Samu Aghehowa, as per Caught Offside.
The Gunners have continued to struggle with centre-forward positions due to fitness problems. Gabriel Jesus has sustained numerous injuries since joining from Manchester City and has been out for almost 10 months owing to a serious knee problem.
Amid the Brazilian’s absence, Kai Havertz established himself as the first-choice striker. However, he has also had injury problems since the start of this year. As a result, the Spanish boss was forced to use Mikel Merino in the No.9 position last term.
The North London club bought Viktor Gyokeres from Sporting CP last summer to bolster the striker position. However, he endured a slow start in the Premier League before picking up a muscular problem.
Therefore, Arteta has been using Merino in the striker position once again in recent matches. Now, Caught Offside claim that Arsenal are planning to sign a new centre-forward next year and have earmarked Aghehowa as a serious option.
The 21-year-old has been in excellent form at Porto since joining from Atletico Madrid last year. After making 28 goal contributions across all competitions last term, he has netted nine goals and registered a solitary assist this season.
So, Porto have no intention of letting their key player leave with his existing deal set to run until 2029. The forward has a £88m release clause in his current contract, and the Portuguese giants might be ready to change their stance should they receive an offer of around £79m.
Aghehowa to Arsenal
The report claim that Arsenal will have to overcome stiff competition to finalise the operation as Chelsea, Tottenham and Newcastle United are in this race as well, with Spurs currently leading the chase.
After impressing in the Liga Portugal, Aghehowa has secured his place in Luis De La Fuente’s Spanish national team. However, he mainly features as a rotational option.
The youngster, standing at 6ft 4in tall, is quick, strong and good in the air. He possesses the necessary attributes to flourish in the Premier League. So, Aghehowa might be a shrewd acquisition for Arsenal with a view to the long-term future should they purchase him.
