Arsenal battling with Chelsea to sign Robinio Vaz
Arsenal are reportedly battling with Chelsea over a deal to sign Olympique de Marseille forward Robinio Vaz, as per Caught Offside.
After drawing against Sunderland just before the international break, the Gunners allowed Manchester City to close the gap at the top of the Premier League table.
However, following the Citizens’ defeat against Newcastle United and Mikel Arteta’s side’s convincing 4-1 victory over arch-rival Tottenham Hotspur last weekend, Arsenal currently have a six-point lead at the top of the table, with Chelsea sitting in second position.
The North London club will face off against the Blues next weekend after hosting Bayern Munich at the Emirates Stadium in the Champions League on Wednesday. Therefore, two very difficult games lie ahead for Arteta’s side.
In the meantime, Arsenal have continued to explore the market to improve the squad further to help the Spanish boss maintain the performance level.
Caught Offside claim that the Gunners have registered their interest in Vaz after tracking his development closely over the last few years. Arsenal’s recruitment team even believe the 18-year-old would be a ‘perfect fit’ for their long-term project.
Vaz to Arsenal
The youngster’s existing deal will run until 2028, and Marseille aren’t in any rush to cash-in on him. However, if they are forced to let him leave, they want a fee worth up to £26m.
The French giants have held talks with the player to hand him a fresh term with an improved financial package, and a release clause might also be included.
The report say that Arsenal are set to face tough competition to seal the deal as Chelsea are also keen on him and are looking to seal the deal in January. Furthermore, Borussia Dortmund, Napoli, and Sevilla are in this race as well. An unnamed European team have even seen their formal bid rejected by the French side.
Vaz usually plays as a rotational option under Roberto De Zerbi. In only three Ligue 1 starts, Vaz has scored four goals and registered two assists thus far this season.
The forward is a talented player and could be a shrewd acquisition for Arsenal should they eventually manage to secure his service next year.
