Arsenal target Gordon has release clause added to contract
Arsenal could sign Anthony Gordon in a potential £100m after reports revealed that the winger now has a release clause in his Newcastle United contract.
According to information from iPaper, as cited by FootballTransfers, the Magpies decided to include the clause following his impressive rise since joining the club.
Gordon became a Newcastle player in January 2023 when he signed from Everton for around £40 million.
Since then, he has developed into one of their most vital attacking players.
His impact has been remarkable, helping Newcastle end their long wait for silverware by winning the 2024/25 Carabao Cup, their first major trophy since 1959.
The 24-year-old’s progress has not gone unnoticed, with Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta said to be a strong admirer of the England international.
Arteta has monitored him closely, viewing him as a potential addition to his attacking options.
The report adds that the structure of Gordon’s new deal mirrors that of Bruno Guimaraes, who agreed fresh terms in 2023.
The Brazilian midfielder’s contract included a £100 million release clause which was active during the following summer.
Future uncertainty around Gordon’s next move
If the report is accurate and Gordon’s clause is also around the £100m mark, Arsenal now know what it will take to get a deal done.
Gordon signed his latest contract extension with the Magpies in October 2024, keeping him at the club until 2030.
Despite Newcastle’s inconsistent start to the current campaign, Gordon has managed to score three goals, remaining one of their reliable attacking outlets.
His rise in form has also caught the attention of Liverpool, who are reportedly exploring options to strengthen their wide positions.
The Reds, like Arsenal, see Gordon as a player with the pace and work rate to fit their system.
Newcastle, however, are determined to keep hold of their star winger as they continue to rebuild under Eddie Howe.
With long-term stability and a strong contract in place, the club are unlikely to part ways with Gordon easily.
Still, the existence of a release clause could leave room for movement if his development attracts stronger bids in the transfer windows ahead.
