Sol Campbell lauds Arsenal star Cristhian Mosquera
Arsenal legend Sol Campbell has showered praise on his former club’s new summer recruit Cristhian Mosquera following his eye-catching displays during the first couple of months of this season.
Although the Gunners already had William Saliba and Gabriel Magalhaes, who are considered the best centre-back pairing in the Premier League in recent years, Mikel Arteta decided to add depth to the defensive department as his ambition is to challenge on all fronts this season.
The North London club purchased Mosquera and Piero Hincapié, with the latter joining on loan from Bayer Leverkusen and an obligation to buy option included in the deal.
Arsenal have bought Mosquera for just £13m, and he has turned out to be the best budget acquisition of this summer. Saliba had fitness problems during the early stages of this season, and the Spaniard filled the Frenchman’s void seamlessly.
He has started four games across all competitions thus far this season, keeping three clean sheets. Now, during a recent interview with GiveMeSport, Campbell has heaped praise on Mosquera and says that he is a mature player for his age.
The 21-year-old possesses the necessary attributes to flourish at the highest level and has the opportunity to learn under Saliba and Gabriel’s tutelage, so he has a bright future ahead.
Campbell lauds Mosquera
Campbell said:
“Mosquera has done really well. He’s come in a couple of times, and he’s played really, really advanced for his age. You know, he’s going to make slight mistakes here and there, but that’s normal. But he’s quick and strong, good positioning, good passer. He knows what it’s all about. He’s responsible, and also it looks like he cares about the game as well.
“He wants to produce a good performance every time he goes on the pitch. He can learn a lot from Saliba and Gabriel. And that’s what you want. You want these young players, if someone gets injured, he comes in, and the level doesn’t drop. And it didn’t drop with him. So he’s nipping at the heels of the guys.”
Mosquera, standing at 6ft 3in tall, ranked through Los Ches’ youth system before establishing himself as an integral part of the Spanish side’s starting XI over the last two seasons.
There were some doubts about Saliba’s long-term future at Arsenal, but he has now extended his deal. So, the Gunners don’t have to worry about their defence for a long time, as the Frenchman, Mosquera, valued at around £26m by Transfermarkt, Gabriel, Riccardo Calafiori, Ben White, Jurrien Timber, and Hincapié are still very young.
Unfortunately, Hincapié has picked up an injury, even though he hasn’t played many games for his new club thus far. The North Londoners will be hoping that he will be able to overcome his issue quickly and won’t turn out to be like Takehiro Tomiyasu.
