Arsenal are reportedly ‘preparing an offer’ to sign Athletic Club midfielder Oihan Sancet, as per Spanish outlet Fichajes.

The 25-year-old enjoyed a productive campaign last term, scoring 17 goals and registering three assists across all competitions. He helped his side qualify for the Champions League by finishing top four in La Liga.

Moreover, the Spaniard guided the Basque club to reach the semi-final of the Europa League before losing to Manchester United. He has started the new campaign brightly as well, scoring a goal in four appearances in all tournaments.

Now, Fichajes state that having been impressed by Sancet’s display during their Champions League clash with Athletic Club, Arsenal have registered their interest in signing him.

The Gunners want to sign a midfielder with the qualities of scoring goals, as they aren’t fully convinced by Mikel Merino. So, they have now set their sights on Sancet, who has been one of the most prolific midfielders in Europe at the moment.

The midfielder has a contract until 2032 with Ernesto Valverde’s side, and they don’t usually let their star man leave easily. So, Arsenal are ready to spend big to convince the La Liga side to sell and are ‘preparing an offer’ of around £69m to seal the deal next summer.

Sancet to Arsenal

Sancet is predominantly an attacking midfielder but can also provide cover in the box-to-box role in a midfield three. He is 6ft 2in tall, technically sound, good in the air, can play threading passes between the lines, has an eye for long-range passing, and also works hard without possession.

Sancet is a talented player and could be a shrewd acquisition for Arsenal should they purchase him. However, they are already well stocked in the midfield department and don’t need to spend big to sign a fresh face unless anyone leaves.

Nevertheless, it is going to be interesting to see whether the North London club eventually make a concrete approach to lure him away from the San Mamés Stadium next year.

Meanwhile, following a comfortable 2-0 victory over Athletic Club in the Champions League, Arsenal will face off against Manchester City in the Premier League on Sunday before the EFL Cup encounter versus Port Vale next week.
