Arteta says standards raised after Arsenal win

Arsenal boss Mikel Arteta believes his side have raised their level after securing a convincing 3-0 win over Nottingham Forest.

The Gunners needed a strong response following their defeat to Liverpool last time out.

They delivered with goals from Martin Zubimendi, who scored twice, and Viktor Gyökeres.

Impressive debut impact

Five of Arsenal’s new signings started the match at the Emirates. Viktor Gyökeres, Martin Zubimendi, Noni Madueke, Cristhian Mosquera and Eberechi Eze were all handed starting roles.

After the game, Arteta praised their contribution.

“The new ones that they started, five of them today, I was really impressed with them.

“I think you can sense and feel that there are new relationships flourishing there that are going to give us different things to become more unpredictable.”

The manager also spoke about the challenge of fielding a completely fresh front line.

He said it was valuable for the players to share minutes together on the pitch.

“We played a front three that we never played before. It was good exposure for them. It was, in terms of the timings as well, exactly what they needed because they played a lot of minutes and overall very happy.

“We need two players per position. This is football, nothing different. Again, in the other teams when you see the qualities that they have, it’s nothing new.”

More depth needed

Arteta also underlined the importance of having a deeper squad to compete across all competitions this season.

The amount of players that the players have to play. They have to play 70 or 74 games throughout the season, it’s never been done. When the intensity goes that high, they are not going to be able to sustain that.

“So you need more players, the standards have raised, we need better players and there’s no secret.”

The Spaniard made it clear that new signings have helped raise the bar, but further additions will still be needed.

Arsenal now turn their attention to the Champions League.

They travel to San Mamés to face Athletic Bilbao in their opening group fixture.

After that, Manchester City visit the Emirates in a huge Premier League clash.
