Arsenal ‘prepared to attack’ to sign Real Madrid’s Guler

By on September 10, 2025

Arsenal were reportedly ‘prepared to attack’ to sign Real Madrid midfielder Arda Guler, as per transfer expert Fabrizio Romano.

After joining Los Blancos from Fenerbahce a couple of years ago, the 20-year-old initially struggled to find regular game time under Carlo Ancelotti.

In his debut campaign, the youngster started only four games in La Liga. He remained on the periphery last term, commencing only 14 games in the Spanish top flight.

However, Guler’s situation has changed since the arrival of Xabi Alonso as the new manager. After starting five matches in the Club World Cup, the Turkish international has commenced all three La Liga games this season.

Now, on his YouTube channel, Romano states that Arsenal were keen on purchasing Guler last year when he was struggling to find game time under Ancelotti.

They were ‘prepared to attack’ if the Italian boss stayed, and Los Merengues were open to letting him leave. However, the Gunners eventually scrapped their plan as the player was determined to stay.

Guler to Arsenal

Romano said:

“There was a club around October/November 2024 that was prepared to attack in case Carlo Ancelotti stayed for this season and in case Real Madrid opened the doors to an exit for Arda Guler.

“Something they never did, let’s be clear, and also Arda never did. But there was a club planning to attack before Xabi Alonso arrived and closed every single door. That club was Arsenal. Arsenal considered the possibility around October/November before Andrea Berta was appointed as the new director.”

Guler is valued at around £39m by Transfermarkt and still has four years left in his current contract. Therefore, the Spanish giants aren’t in any rush to cash-in on him.

Martin Odegaard joined Arsenal on loan after struggling to find regular game time at Real Madrid, and Arsenal attempted a similar move for Guler. The Turkish international is a creative midfielder by trait but is also comfortable on the right flank and in the box-to-box role.

After failing to buy Guler, Arsenal have reinforced the CAM area by signing Eberechi Eze this summer. Moreover, Ethan Nwaneri has risen through the Hale End academy and has established himself as a key player in Arteta’s squad.

So, it hasn’t turned out to be an issue that Arsenal eventually couldn’t manage to secure Guler’s service to reinforce the squad.
