Arsenal eye move to sign Sporting star Zeno Debast
Arsenal are reportedly planning to make a move to sign Sporting CP defender Zeno Debast, as per Caught Offside.
The 21-year-old moved to Jose Alvalade Stadium from Anderlecht last summer. In his debut campaign, the Belgian helped his side win the Liga Portugal title. In 23 league starts last term, he registered three assists and kept nine clean sheets.
After displaying eye-catching performances in club football, the youngster has established himself as a key player for the Belgium national team. He started both games for his country against Liechtenstein and Kazakhstan during this international break, helping his side win both matches 6-0.
Now, Caught Offside claim that Debast’s promising performances haven’t gone unnoticed as he has attracted the attention of a few big Premier League clubs.
Arsenal have registered their interest in him and have sent scouts to Portugal to watch him in action closely before making a potential swoop in January or next summer.
The youngster has a contract until 2029 with Sporting and has a £69m release clause. However, the Portuguese giants might be open to letting him leave for a discount deal.
Debast to Arsenal
Apart from Arsenal, Manchester United and Aston Villa are in this race as well, while the Red Devils have also been monitoring his development closely. Ruben Amorim’s side are even preparing to launch a formal proposal worth around £35m to seal the deal, but the Lions want more than that.
Debast played a few games under Amorim last term before the manager’s move to Old Trafford. So, he could be instrumental in convincing the player to choose his side over Arsenal.
However, the Gunners have shown that the Amorim factor doesn’t always prevail in the transfer battle for Sporting players, defeating United in the race for Viktor Gyokeres.
Debast is a 6ft 3in tall centre-back but is also capable of providing cover in the engine room if needed. He is technically sound, can play out from the back, and also has an eye for long-range passing.
The Belgian is a highly talented player and possesses the potential to reach the top. So, he could be a shrewd acquisition for Arsenal should they purchase him.
