Arsenal could make late move to sign Julian Alvarez
Arsenal could reportedly make a late move to sign Atletico Madrid star Julian Alvarez, as per The Sun.
After joining Manchester City from River Plate, the Argentinian enjoyed great success, winning two Premier League titles, a Champions League trophy, and several other major cup competitions.
However, he struggled to become the first-choice centre-forward due to the presence of Erling Haaland. Therefore, he decided to leave the Citizens and join Los Blancos to play regularly last summer.
The South American enjoyed a productive campaign at Estadio Metropolitano last term, scoring 29 goals and registering seven assists across all competitions. However, he had to end the season without a trophy.
The 25-year-old has had a bright start to this campaign, scoring an excellent goal against Espanyol in the opening La Liga game. However, Los Rojiblancos ended up on the losing side.
Apart from showcasing his qualities in club football, Alvarez has also enjoyed success on the international stage, winning a World Cup and two Copa America trophies.
Now, The Sun report that following Kai Havertz’s injury, Mikel Arteta has been left with Viktor Gyokeres as the only centre-forward option, as Gabriel Jesus has also been out injured.
Alvarez to Arsenal
Therefore, Arsenal could make a late attempt to sign Alvarez to reinforce the No.9 position and create competition for the former Sporting CP star.
Having joined Atletico Madrid last summer, the forward, valued at around £86m by Transfermarkt, still has five years left in his current contract. Therefore, Diego Simeone’s side are likely to demand a huge fee to let their star man leave.
Following Havertz’s recent injury, Arsenal have signed Eberechi Eze to bolster the frontline. However, he isn’t a striker, and if Gyokeres also develops any injury problems, Arteta will end up without a specialist striker like last season.
Alvarez is a hardworking player and possesses the poacher instinct inside the box. Furthermore, he is excellent at taking set pieces. The South American is a top-class player and would be a great coup for Arsenal if they were to purchase him.
However, it is going to be interesting to see whether the North London club eventually make a concrete approach to secure his service before the end of this transfer window.
