Viktor Gyökeres is reportedly refusing to train with Sporting Lisbon as he looks to force through a transfer to Arsenal this summer.

Reports from journalist Ben Jacobs suggest today could play a major role in shaping the next steps of this ongoing saga.

The striker is said to be very keen to secure a switch to north London.

Arsenal have made the 27-year-old a priority for the centre forward position. A five-year deal between the player and the Gunners has already been agreed.

Sporting, however, have asked the Swedish forward to return to training today, but he is expected to decline once again.

Gyökeres has held the same stance since the start of the summer window.

Dispute over agreement and transfer fee

The former Coventry City forward believes Sporting Lisbon have not honoured a previous promise made between both parties before the summer began.

According to the report, Gyökeres thinks there was a ‘gentleman’s agreement’ that he would be allowed to leave if a suitable offer was received.

Arsenal are believed to have made a proposal worth £51.8 million in base fee, along with another £8.6 million in performance-based add-ons.

Despite the total package meeting Gyökeres’ expectations, Sporting have so far rejected the bid.

The Portuguese side are holding out for a fixed fee of £60.5 million plus extras.

The delay in agreement has caused tension between the player and his current club, with Gyökeres now refusing to train as a form of protest.

The striker has made his intentions very clear and remains focused on making the move to the Premier League this summer.

Mikel Arteta is said to admire Gyökeres’ playing style, and sees him as a strong addition to Arsenal’s attacking options ahead of the new campaign.

With both the player and Arsenal keen to get the deal completed, today could prove decisive in whether Sporting soften their stance or risk upsetting one of their key players.
