Arsenal confident of signing Viktor Gyökeres

Arsenal are closing in on the signing of Viktor Gyokeres and are confident of finally agreeing a deal for the Sporting CP striker, according to Football Insider.

The Gunners have shown strong interest in the Sweden international as they look to bring in a reliable striker this summer.

Gyökeres has been one of the most talked-about names during this transfer window, with his transfer fee sparking debates across clubs and media.

Mikel Arteta is keen to strengthen his forward options and sees the 27-year-old as a perfect fit to lead Arsenal’s attack next season.

Reports claim that the club are now stepping up their efforts to reach an agreement with Sporting and there is a growing confidence the deal will get done.

 Gyökeres unhappy over broken agreement

The report adds that Gyökeres’ representatives travelled to Portugal this week to hold key talks with Sporting over his future. They are said to be trying to finalise his move to Arsenal and it would be a ‘huge signing’ if the Gunners can get it over the line.

It is understood that Gyökeres had a gentleman’s agreement with Sporting regarding a move if a suitable offer came in.

However, the Portuguese club have reportedly backtracked on that promise, which has not gone down well with the player.

With pre-season fast approaching, sources suggest that Gyökeres is now threatening to go on strike if the matter is not resolved.

The striker wants clarity on his future before returning to training, as he feels let down by Sporting’s change of stance.

Journalist Pete O’Rourke told Football Insider:

My understanding is that his representatives were in Portugal for showdown talks with Sporting Lisbon to try and thrash this deal out,”

“There is a growing optimism from his side and from Arsenal that they can get it over the line.

“The Sweden international has been one of Arsenal’s top targets this summer.

“Gyokeres is the clear favourite now to make that move to the Emirates Stadium.

“There’s been a bit of an ongoing row between Gyokeres and Sporing in recent weeks.

“It’s been claimed he could go on strike because he feels they’ve gone back on a gentleman’s agreement to let him leave for below his release clause.

“No deal is done until it’s done, but there is a growing optimism Arsenal are finally going to get Gyokeres as their new number nine next season.

“It’s just a matter of trying to thrash out a fee with Sporting.

“It would be a huge signing for Arsenal because that’s an area that has been lacking under Arteta.”

Arsenal are hopeful that the player’s desire to leave will help move the deal forward in the coming days.

The club are expected to continue talks with both Sporting and Gyökeres’ camp to try and settle the fee.

Gyökeres enjoyed an outstanding campaign last season, scoring 54 goals and providing a further 13 assists in 52 games across all competitions – making him one of the deadliest forwards in world football.

Arsenal believe his profile matches what they need to take another step forward under Arteta in the new campaign.

The north London club are now working hard to avoid any delay and finalise the deal before the start of pre-season.
