Arsenal prioritising signing Man Utd target Viktor Gyokeres
Arsenal are reportedly prioritising signing Manchester United target and Sporting CP star Viktor Gyokeres, as per Football Insider.
Having endured yet another trophyless campaign this season, the Gunners are said to be looking to remain busy this summer to hand Mikel Arteta the necessary tools to win big silverware next season.
The Spanish boss is keen on signing a new striker this summer, and Arsenal have been linked with numerous names in recent weeks. Alexander Isak was previously reported as the primary target.
However, Newcastle United have no intention of letting him leave this summer. So, Arsenal have been forced to explore alternative options, and their new sporting director, Andrea Berta, is reportedly a big fan of Gyokeres.
Football Insider state that Man Utd are also interested in the Swedish international, and they have an edge in this race due to Ruben Amorim, under whom Gyokeres flourished in his career at Sporting.
However, Arsenal don’t want to go down without fighting as they have identified the 26-year-old as the ‘top target’ to reinforce the centre-forward position.
Gyokeres to Arsenal
Arsenal are likely to be able to offer Champions League football to Gyokeres, but United will have to win the Europa League to qualify for this competition.
They will face off against Tottenham Hotspur in the final of Europe’s second-tier competition, and against them, United haven’t won since 2022. Therefore, winning this tournament won’t be easy for Amorim’s side.
The Portuguese giants are open to cashing-in on Gyokeres for a fee of around £60m, and Arsenal are prepared to hire him by matching the asking price.
Gyokeres has been one of the most prolific goal-scorers in Europe, and the North Londoners will be hoping that he will be able to replicate the same performance in the Premier League should he eventually join this summer.
After making 58 goal contributions last term, he has netted 52 goals and registered 13 assists in 50 appearances in all competitions this campaign. The forward even helped his side win the Liga Portugal title last term and has been guiding them to defend the title this season.
It is going to be interesting to see whether the North London club eventually manage to secure his service by defeating Man Utd in this race in the upcoming transfer window.
