Arsenal are set to miss out on winning the Premier League title once again this season, but they have the opportunity to end the campaign with silverware by winning the Champions League trophy.

The Gunners have reached the quarterfinal of this competition and have drawn to play against Real Madrid. They will host Los Blancos at the Emirates Stadium in the first leg tonight.

The Spanish giants are the record European champions and the current holders. Therefore, there are no tougher opponents to face in this competition than they are.

However, Real Madrid have had an inconsistent campaign thus far this season and even lost to Valencia in La Liga last weekend. So, that will give Arsenal encouragement ahead of this encounter.

Team news

Gabriel Jesus, Kai Havertz, Gabriel Magalhaes and Takehiro Tomiyasu’s season is already over owing to injuries so they aren’t in contention to feature tonight. Moreover, Riccardo Calafiori is unavailable due to his knee problem, while Raheem Sterling is suspended for this first leg.

Predicted line-up

Mikel Arteta made a few changes to his starting eleven against Everton last weekend, keeping an eye on this crucial fixture and all of them are likely to be recalled tonight.

David Raya should keep hold of his place between the sticks. William Saliba is set to be in the centre-back position and the Frenchman would be paired up with Jakub Kiwior for the visitors.

Jurrien Timber may commence in the right-back position, while Myles Lewis-Skelly should be on the opposite side. The youngster has made a few costly errors this season in the Premier League but will have to keep his concentration high tonight.

Thomas Partey should return to the starting line-up following a weekend break and Declan Rice could be in the No.8 role. Martin Odegaard would be the creative midfielder.

Bukayo Saka is expected to make his first start tonight since returning from his hamstring problem. Gabriel Martinelli might start on the left, while Mikel Merino is likely to be in the centre-forward position for the North London club. Therefore, Leandro Trossard may feature off the bench.
