Arsenal target £50m Kounde to boost defensive options
Arsenal are reportedly preparing a move for Barcelona defender Jules Kounde, according to reports from Spanish outlet Fichajes
The Gunners have had a respectable Premier League campaign this season and currently sit in second place.
However, with the title seemingly out of reach for another campaign, Arsenal are already looking ahead to next season.
League leaders Liverpool, managed by Arne Slot, are 15 points clear of Arsenal, though the Gunners have a game in hand.
The two sides are also set to face off in May. Despite the slim mathematical chance, it would take an extraordinary collapse from Liverpool to let Arsenal back into the title race.
If Arsenal finish second as expected, it would mark their third consecutive season as Premier League runners-up.
They had been tipped to mount a serious title challenge after coming close twice against Manchester City, but Liverpool’s remarkable form this season has thrown a wrench into those plans.
Injury setbacks and defensive needs
One of the main challenges for Arteta this season has been injuries to key attacking players at crucial moments. Gabriel Jesus, Kai Havertz, Bukayo Saka, and Gabriel Martinelli have all missed matches recently, leaving Arsenal short of firepower.
However, Arteta is also keen to strengthen his defense, with reports from Spain suggesting that Barcelona’s Jules Kounde is a prime target.
The French international, who has impressed as a right-back this season, is seen as an ideal fit for the Gunners.
His versatility to play both as a right-back and a center-back makes him a valuable addition to Arsenal’s backline.
Arsenal preparing £63m offer for Kounde
Sources close to Arsenal suggest that the London club is willing to offer up to £63 million for Kounde’s signature.
The defender has also been linked with Manchester United, but it appears Arsenal are leading the race for his services.
Barcelona are reportedly undecided on whether to sell the 24-year-old. Kounde’s performances have been vital to the club’s defensive stability under manager Flick, but the Catalan giants face financial challenges and may consider selling if a suitable offer comes in.
Much will depend on the market dynamics and whether Barcelona can find a viable replacement before making a final decision.
Kounde’s ability to play out from the back and his speed in defensive transitions align well with Arteta’s tactical approach at the Emirates.
Strengthening the defensive unit is seen as vital if Arsenal want to compete at the highest level in both the Premier League and the Champions League next season.
Arsenal remain hopeful of securing the deal, but the coming weeks will be crucial in determining whether Barcelona will part ways with one of their key players.
