Arsenal preparing to submit bid to sign Morten Hjulmand
Arsenal are reportedly preparing to submit an opening offer to sign Sporting CP star Morten Hjulmand, as per Caught Offside.
It was thought ahead of the summer window that the Gunners would look to sign a new holding midfielder to replace Thomas Partey. The Ghanaian was linked with a move away from the club and it was suggested that Mikel Arteta lost faith in him following his consistent injury problems.
However, the African eventually stayed at the club and Arsenal didn’t sign anyone to strengthen the number six position. Instead, they purchased Mikel Merino from Real Sociedad but he is more comfortable playing in the box-to-box role.
Partey has been playing regularly during the early stages of this season. However, his long-term future at the club remains uncertain as his current contract will expire at the end of this season.
So, it looks like Arsenal are looking at options in the market as a potential replacement for Partey. Caught Offside states that Hjulmand is on their radar and they value the Dane at around £50m and could make an opening proposal at around that sum soon.
Hjulmand to Arsenal
However, the midfielder has a release clause worth around £67m so it is not sure whether Sporting will allow their star man to leave for around £50m.
Hjulmand is keen on moving to the Premier League so he would be open to joining the North London club should they eventually make a concrete approach.
However, the report says Manchester United and Manchester City are also in this race, while Barcelona have also expressed their interest in signing him. Therefore, it won’t be easy for Arsenal to lure him to the Emirates Stadium.
The 25-year-old has enjoyed a stellar debut campaign at the Jose Alvalade Stadium after joining the club last summer, helping his side win the league title last term. Moreover, he is also a member of the Denmark national team.
The 25-year-old is comfortable with the ball at his feet and is also efficient in defensive contributions. Moreover, he is good in the air and has an eye for scoring goals from distance.
It is going to be interesting to see whether the North London club eventually opt to make a concrete approach to secure his signature next year.
