Arsenal in pole position to sign Everton’s Amadou Onana
Arsenal (and, unfortunately, Manchester United), as per Sport via a report by Teamtalk, have gained a major boost in their pursuit of Everton’s midfield dynamo, Amadou Onana. Barcelona, the other potential suitor for the Belgian international, as per the report, has given up on the deal.
Arsenal have long admired Onana. They considered signing him in the summer of 2022 before he joined Everton in a deal worth £33 million. He’s performed admirably for them; this season, he’s made 29 appearances, scoring three goals.
Onana’s brilliance in Everton’s engine room has won him many admirers, with Teamtalk revealing that all of the Premier League’s big six want him, with Arsenal, Manchester United, and Barcelona the main suitors.
Arsenal may consider him the perfect heir to Thomas Partey. After signing Declan Rice for £100 million last summer, the club reportedly wants to provide Mikel Arteta with another top central midfielder to complete his rebuild.
Last week, Charles Watts made a claim that Onana could be Arsenal’s most likely summer midfield signing as other targets may prove too difficult to sign.
Barcelona priced out of the Onana swoop
For the 22-year-old, Arsenal may only have to worry about Manchester United. Barcelona, which would have been a major transfer competitor, has seemingly withdrawn from the race. According to Sport, Everton’s £52 million price tag for their midfielder has prompted the La Liga giants to withdraw their interest.
With Barcelona out of the running, Arsenal should be in pole position to sign the Belgium international ahead of Manchester United. Hopefully, the opportunity to contend for the league and play Champions League football appeals to him.
Amadou Onana is a combative box-to-box midfielder who wins his duels. At 22, he has plenty of room to improve; he may reach his peak at the Emirates Stadium. He and Rice could make Arsenal’s engine room the best for seasons to come.
