Arsenal plotting swoop for Bayer Leverkusen star Wirtz
Arsenal are reportedly plotting a swoop for Bayer Leverkusen star Florian Wirtz in the upcoming transfer window, as per the Spanish outlet Mundo Deportivo.
The 20-year-old has started the new season brilliantly, scoring five goals and registering nine assists in 14 appearances in all competitions. Xavi Alonso’s side have managed to place themselves at the summit of the German Bundesliga table at the moment and the youngster has been playing a pivotal role in Leverkusen’s excellent displays.
So, it appears Wirtz’s excellent displays for the German side haven’t gone unnoticed as he has already started to attract the attention of several big clubs around Europe with Arsenal among those to have registered their interest.
According to the report by Mundo Deportivo, Arsenal have been keeping a close eye on the development of Wirtz ahead of a potential move in the upcoming transfer window.
The report further claims that Leverkusen don’t want to let their star man leave for cheap and want at least £70m. So, Arsenal will have to break the bank to lure the 20-year-old to the Emirates Stadium.
Wirtz to Arsenal
However, Mundo Deportivo states that Barcelona, Real Madrid, Manchester City and Tottenham Hotspur are also keen on signing him so the Gunners are set to face tough competition from their rivals in getting any potential deal done for the German international.
Wirtz is a highly talented player and is deemed one of the best young midfielders in the world. He is technically sound, can play threading passes between the lines, has the ability to create chances for attackers, can finish off his chances and also works extremely hard without possession.
With Emile Smith Rowe linked with a move away from the Emirates Stadium, Wirtz could be a shrewd signing to replace the Hale End graduate. However, I think Arsenal already have enough firepower in their attacking midfield position so they don’t need to spend the reported £68m fee to purchase a new number ten.
Therefore, they would be better off saving the money to reinforce other areas of the squad. However, it is going to be interesting to see whether Arsenal eventually decide to make a concrete approach to sign Wirtz in the upcoming transfer window to reinforce their midfield department.
