Arsenal make the first move to sign Sporting star Diomande
Arsenal have reportedly made the first move to sign Sporting CP star Ousmane Diomande this summer, as per the Portuguese outlet Record.
It has widely been suggested that the Gunners are set to remain busy in the upcoming transfer window to strengthen the squad in order to challenge on all fronts from next season.
Midfield is seemingly the area that Mikel Arteta has prioritised to revamp this summer but along with that, bolstering the backline is also on the Spanish boss’ agenda.
Despite enjoying a brilliant campaign for the majority of the 2022/23 season, Arsenal failed to keep up their momentum following William Saliba’s injury absence. So, the North London club have decided to sign a new centre-back to support the Frenchman next season. They have been linked with a few options over the last few months with Diomande now emerging as a potential target.
While citing and translating the print version of Record, Sport Witness says that Arsenal have registered their interest in Diomande and have recently enquired about his possible availability this summer.
Diomande to Arsenal
However, the report claims that having just signed him last January, Sporting have no intention of letting the defender leave in the upcoming transfer window unless his potential suitors such as Arsenal trigger his £69m[€80m] release clause.
So, it seems Arsenal will have to break the bank to secure the 19-year-old’s signature. Record further states that Juventus are also interested in signing the youngster, therefore, the Gunners will have to overcome the Bianconeri’s challenge in getting any potential deal done for Diomande should they formalise their interest.
The Ivorian is quick, strong, good in the air, comfortable playing out from the back and also excellent in defensive contributions. He is an extremely talented defender and possesses high potential. So, he would be an excellent acquisition for Arsenal with a view to the long-term future if they decide to purchase him this summer.
However, it is highly unlikely that the North London club will push forward with a deal to sign Diomande should Sporting stay firm on their inflated £69m valuation. In that case, Arsenal will be forced to shift focus to alternative targets to bolster their backline.
