Arsenal contemplating move for Lille star Jonathan David
Arsenal are reportedly eyeing a move for LOSC Lille forward Jonathan David, as per the transfer insider Dean Jones (via TEAMtalk).
The 22-year-old joined the French side back in 2020 from Belgian team KAA Gent for a fee of around £27m. After a decent first couple of campaigns at the Stade Pierre Mauroy, the youngster has enjoyed a brilliant start to this season, scoring nine goals and notching up three assists in 14 Ligue 1 appearances.
The Canadian will be in action in this month’s World Cup with his national squad and the forward’s suitors would be keeping a close eye on his performance ahead of the January transfer window.
Jones has claimed that Arsenal are ‘considering’ a move for David as the Gunners are looking to reinforce their forward positions in the upcoming window.
The journalist further states that the north London club are set to face tough competition – from other Premier League clubs – to sign the Canadian with Tottenham Hotspur being one of the clubs keen on signing the striker.
Manchester United have also shown interest in purchasing the talented forward as a replacement for Cristiano Ronaldo, who is linked with a move away from Old Trafford this winter.
Jonathan David to Arsenal
Jonathan David could be a very good acquisition for Arsenal. The youngster is quick, strong, comfortable on both feet, decent in the air and – most importantly for a striker – can finish off his chances.
So, adding more options in the forward line could be a shrewd decision with Gabriel Jesus and Eddie Nketiah already at Arteta’s disposal. However, this move is more likely to happen next summer rather than this winter, given it has widely been touted that the north London club are looking to reinforce their midfield department and the flanks this January, over a centre-forward.
The 22-year-old is valued at around £45m by the Transfermarkt and he still has more than two and a half years left in his current contract. So, Lille won’t be in any rush to sell their star man in January and the Gunners would need to spend big if they were to make a move for him this winter.
A potential summer move for David, at the end of this campaign, is a more likely scenario for Arsenal. Focusing on adding more firepower to their midfield and the wide areas should be their priority this January – given they lack quality options in those two departments after the first team options – before shifting their attention to bolstering other areas.
