Arsenal set to ‘inject money’ to reinforce the squad in January
Arsenal will reportedly splash the cash to reinforce the squad in the January transfer window, as per ESPN journalist Joao Castelo-Branco.
After narrowly missing out on a Champions League spot last season, it appeared the Gunners might have started the campaign with the objective of securing their place in the top four and perhaps winning one of the cup competitions this term.
However, as the season progresses Mikel Arteta’s side seem to have become a force to be reckoned with and the likeliest contender to challenge for the Premier League title along with Manchester City.
Despite winning the first five consecutive games in the league, the defeat against Manchester United made people doubt whether Arsenal possess the capacity to win versus the big six opponents. However, since then, the Gunners showcased their qualities and came away with all three points against Liverpool, Tottenham and now Chelsea.
Arsenal steamrolled over Graham Potter’s side at Stamford Bridge this weekend and won the game thanks to Gabriel Magalhaes’ solitary goal. Had Arsenal’s forwards been a bit more clinical, on the day, then the scoreline could easily have been very embarrassing for the hosts.
Arsenal to inject money to reinforce the squad
Writing on Twitter, Castelo-Branco has claimed that Arsenal hierarchy are willing to take advantage of their current momentum and are keen on strengthening the squad with quality options this winter.
The journalist further states that the north London club ‘will inject money’ to reinforce the squad this January in order to stay in the title race during the second half of this campaign.
Castelo-Branco said:
“Arsenal winning big games is in for the title in earnest. I have information that the club wants to take advantage of the moment, will inject money to reinforce the squad well in January to be able to compete until the end.”
I think Arteta has a thin squad at his disposal and it would be extremely difficult for the Spanish boss to mount a sustained title charge during the second half of the season with his current team. Arsenal will have to play twice every week for the next few months after the World Cup break and I believe the Gunners’ boss doesn’t have enough quality options, after the first eleven, to keep their momentum going in every competition.
The Emirates outfit showed signs of sluggishness during the second half games away to Leeds United and Southampton recently, due to the congested fixture schedule and lack of squad depth.
Therefore, strengthening the squad in January would definitely help Arteta to go head-to-head against the Citizens for the Premier League title this season. A central midfielder and winger are certainly needed if Arsenal are to cope with playing in four competitions next year.
