Arsenal confirm Saka injury boost ahead of West Ham trip
Mikel Arteta has provided an update on Bukayo Saka, Thomas Partey and Takehiro Tomiyasu ahead of Arsenal’s clash with West Ham on Sunday afternoon.
Saka started during Arsenal’s 3-1 victory over Manchester United last weekend but the attacker limped off in the second half after appearing to pick up a thigh injury.
Arteta suggested after the game that Saka had aggravated a knock that he was carrying in the days leading up to the match last Saturday so it was feared he was facing a spell on the sidelines.
However, the 20-year-old was pictured in training on Thursday and Arteta has now confirmed Saka has made a swift recovery. As long as he doesn’t suffer any set-back, the England ace is expected to be fit to face West Ham on Sunday, which is a major boost for Arsenal.
However, there isn’t such positive news on Partey’s situation. The Ghana international has been out since suffering a thigh injury against Crystal Palace earlier this month.
He was spotted running on a treadmill this week raising hopes he may be close to returning to action. However, while Arteta says Partey is progressing well, the club still don’t expect him to play again this season.
The boss also gave the latest on Tomiyasu after he made his long-awaited return from a calf injury with a late appearance against United. It was his first minutes in over three months so Arteta is undecided whether to throw Tomi in from the start on Sunday.
The Spaniard told Arsenal.com:
on whether Bukayo Saka is OK…
Hopefully he will be fine. He had some issues in the final part of the game but he’s recovered well and we expect him to be available.on Thomas Partey’s recovery…
He’s progressing but he had a significant injury, a recurring injury as well, so we don’t expect him to make progress that quickly to see him this season, but hopefully I am wrong.on whether Takehiro Tomiyasu can start…
You only know that, after a player’s been out for a long spell, when you put him on the pitch. He hasn’t started any matches yet. He’s lacked a bit of time on the pitch so it’s a decision we will make tomorrow.
Obviously it a huge relief that Saka’s injury wasn’t serious and he’s fit to face West Ham, but it’s equally disappointing to hear Partey still isn’t expected to return before the end of the season.
Let’s hope Mo Elneny can continue his recent form!
