Arsenal eye swoop to sign 21-goal star as Arteta looks to revamp attack – reports
According to The Telegraph, Arsenal are eyeing a surprise swoop to sign Everton striker Dominic Calvert-Lewin as Mikel Arteta looks to overhaul his squad this summer.
The boss is expected to be extremely busy in the market over the coming weeks as it’s clear the Arsenal squad needs strengthening after finishing eighth in each of the last two seasons.
A couple of full-backs, a centre-back, a couple of midfielders and a goalkeeper are all likely to be on the agenda but it appears Arteta is also hoping to revamp his striking options this summer.
The Telegraph claims Arsenal have identified Calvert-Lewin as a potential target and are watching his situation closely ahead of a possible move – if we’re able to offload unwanted players.
The likes of Granit Xhaka, Lucas Torreira, Matteo Guendouzi, Hector Bellerin, Joe Willock and Ainsley Maitland-Niles are all expected to leave the Emirates this summer to help raise extra transfer funds.
Laca out, Calvert-Lewin in?
However, if Arsenal are to sign another striker such as Calvert-Lewin then I’d expect a forward will need to leave first. Eddie Nketiah has been linked with a move but I imagine Alexandre Lacazette will be the man to go if Arteta wants Calvert-Lewin.
Laca has just one year left on his contract so Arsenal will need to cash-in this summer or we risk losing him for nothing in 12 months time. I’m sure we can still get a decent fee for the Frenchman and it would free-up a space in the squad for another striker to come in.
Calvert-Lewin would be an excellent signing as he’s developed into a top class striker at Everton. He scored 21 goals in 39 appearances in all competitions last season and was named in the England squad for Euro 2020.
The 24-year-old is coming into his prime years and has experience playing in the Premier League – so won’t have to adjust to life in England – therefore I think he’d be a terrific addition to the squad.
However, I highly doubt Everton will want to sell him and Arsenal can’t offer any sort of European football so I think any deal would be extremely difficult to pull off.
