Arsenal plot move to sign £51m star as Arteta looks to fill key position
The summer transfer window is now open and, according to reports in Spain via TeamTalk, Arsenal are eyeing a move to sign £51.6m-rated Sevilla midfielder Joao Jordan.
It looks like Mikel Arteta will be staying as manager but the Spaniard is under pressure to build a side capable of pushing for the top four next year after overseeing a disastrous campaign in north London.
Arteta is expected to overhaul his squad over the coming weeks and midfield is an area that will see a lot of change as Dani Ceballos has gone back to Real Madrid following the end of his loan spell while Granit Xhaka looks set to leave Arsenal this summer.
The Swiss international is reportedly in talks over a possible move to Roma while Matteo Guendouzi, Joe Willock and Lucas Torreira are also expected to seal permanent moves away from the club so we’ll be down to the bare bones in midfield.
Therefore, Arsenal are going to need to sign at least two central midfielders this summer and it appears Jordan has emerged as a target as TeamTalk are citing a report that originates from the print version of Marca that claims the Sevilla ace is on our ‘agenda’.
The Spanish report suggests that Arsenal are now eyeing a move to sign the 26-year-old but any deal is going to be difficult as Sevilla are desperate to keep hold of him and Jordan’s release clause is set at £51.6m [€60m].
There is no way Arsenal can afford to pay that kind of money so unless Sevilla agree to do business at a much-reduced fee, then I really don’t see how we’ll be able to get a deal done for the midfielder.
Jordan is unlikely to agitate for a move as, according to the report, he’s content in Seville and the La Liga outfit are lining-up a new contract that would tie him to the club until at least 2024.
Jordan is a good player with lots of ability so he might be a decent signing for Arsenal, however, it appears a deal is very unlikely so we’re better off moving on to more realistic targets.
Arteta can’t waste time chasing dead ends. We need to get players in the door who’re desperate to play for The Arsenal and ideally the majority of our transfer business should be done before pre-season starts.
