Video: Arsenal 2-1 Blackpool: Smith Rowe books quarter final spot for Gunners
Arsenal had to dig deep to book their place in the last-8 of the Carabao Cup after narrowly beating Blackpool 2-1 at the Emirates this evening with both sides finishing the game with 10-men.
We dominated the early stages of the game and eventually opened the scoring in the 33rd minute when right-back Stephan Lichtsteiner scored following a lovely pass from Matteo Guendouzi.
Arsenal doubled their advantage just minutes in to the second half when Emile Smith-Rowe scored from close range to make it 2-0 after Carl Jenkinson’s cross-come-shot was palmed in to his path.
In typical Arsenal fashion we had to make life difficult for ourselves after Guendouzi got himself sent off in the 55th minute for two silly bookings and Blackpool took full advantage after Paudi O’Connor headed home from a 66th minute corner. The defending was woeful and Petr Cech was rooted to his line so it was 2-1 with 25 minutes to play.
However, Blackpool blew their chance as the goalscorer O’Connor turned villain after he was shown a straight red card for a poor challenge on Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang in the 83rd minute.
We held on to secure a 2-1 win and book our place in the draw for the quarter finals.
Here are all the goals from the game:
