From Italy: Transfer talks underway as Arsenal battle to sign midfield star
According to reports in Italy via talkSPORT, Arsenal are facing a battle with Roma over the free transfer signing of Schalke midfielder Max Meyer this summer after transfer talks got underway.
Meyer has been with Schalke his entire career having progressed through the youth system and is considered as one of the best young players in German football right now.
The 22-year-old made his name as a winger but he’s excelled since being moved back in to a deeper midfield role this season and he’s already represented Germany at senior international level.
We’ve been tracking the youngster for some time and it appears Meyer has been made a prime target as Arsene Wenger looks to sign a new central midfielder this summer.
However, it looks like we’ll face some serious competition as talkSPORT are citing reports from II Messaggero that claim Roma have joined Arsenal in opening talks with Meyer’s camp.
The report says both clubs have expressed their interest to the players agent and it’s now down to Meyer to decide whether he sees his future in England or in Italy.
The midfielder is available on a free transfer as his contract expires in June and Schalke confirmed earlier this week that Meyer is set to leave for nothing after calling off talks over an extension.
Schalke director Christian Heidel is quoted as saying by the Metro:
‘At the moment we can and must expect that Max leaves the club in the summer. Everything suggests that.”
‘There is no offer from us and no wish from Max to have a conversation again.’
We desperately need to sign another ball playing midfielder as Jack Wilshere looks increasingly likely to leave when his deal run out in June while Santi Cazorla is unlikely to play for Arsenal again due to a serious ankle injury.
Meyer would be a superb addition to the squad if we could snap him up on a free transfer but it looks like we’ll face stiff competition from Roma for his signature.
