Done deal: Mesut Ozil confirms he’s signed new contract with Arsenal
Mesut Ozil has confirmed he’s signed a new long-term contract with Arsenal tying him to the club until 2021.
Ozil’s future had been in doubt in recent months as his contract was due to expire in June and we’d initially struggled to agree terms with his representatives.
With Alexis Sanchez also refusing to sign a new deal, at one point it looked like Arsenal were set to lose their best two players for nothing in the summer.
However, Sanchez was swapped for Henrikh Mkhitaryan this month and news began to emerge in recent days that Ozil had agreed terms over a new deal at Arsenal.
Mohamed Elneny confirmed the news earlier today but now Ozil has taken to Twitter to announce himself that he’s signed a new three-and-a-half-year deal with the club.
In a statement, Ozil said that after taking his time to consider his future, he’s proud to continue his career at Arsenal and hopes to achieve big things over the coming years.
Mesut posted on Twitter:
This is HUGE news for Arsenal as it would have been a disaster to lose Ozil for nothing in the summer. We’ve seen reports suggesting his new deal is worth over £300,000-a-week but who cares, Ozil is vital to this team and we had to ensure he stayed at the Emirates.
Let’s hope he clicks with our new signings as Ozil, Mkhitaryan and Aubameyang have the potential to be a devastating front three.
