Arsenal boss confirms blow – key man set to miss Huddersfield clash

Arsene Wenger has confirmed that Mesut Ozil is expected to miss Arsenal’s clash with Huddersfield after sitting out the win at Burnley this afternoon due to illness.

Ozil was rested for the Europa League defeat to Cologne on Thursday night but was fully expected to be restored to the attack at Turf Moor this afternoon.

However, the German international was a surprise omission when the team sheets were revealed at 1pm and the clubs official Twitter account soon revealed that Ozil would miss the game through illness.

Speaking after a hard fought 1-0 victory, Wenger confirmed that Ozil had travelled with the squad to the hotel but was forced to head back to London after feeling unwell this morning.

The boss says he’s not seen Ozil himself yet so will have to assess the attacker over the coming days but has suggested that the 29-year-old will be forced to miss Wednesday’s visit of Huddersfield to the Emirates

Wenger told Arsenal.com:

I haven’t even seen him, the doctor came to see me and said we had to travel him back today. He was in the hotel with us. He travelled up and travelled back and we brought Maitland-Niles, who arrived at 1pm because we were only 17 [without Mesut]. Will he be available for Wednesday? Certainly he will be short for Wednesday.

It’s safe to say we missed Ozil today as without him we lacked any spark in the final third so let’s hope he manages to overcome his illness quickly and be fit to face Huddersfield.

They are a solid side and I expect they will be difficult to break down in midweek so we’ll need Ozil’s creativity to help unlock the door as it’s vital we continue the momentum with another win on Wednesday’s.

Today’s victory saw us climb above Liverpool and Tottenham in to fourth spot so it’s important we cement that position ahead of next weekend’s huge clash with Man Utd.
