According to the Telegraph, Arsene Wenger is ready to make a major tactical change by ditching the back three against Bournemouth on Saturday following Arsenal’s poor start to the new season.

Wenger has used a flat back four for the vast majority of his 20-years in charge at the Emirates but he switched to the fashionable back three during the back end of last season.

The new 3-4-2-1 formation brought instant success as we won 10 of our last 11 games to narrowly miss out on the top four and win the FA Cup by beating champions Chelsea at Wembley.

Wenger stuck with the new system at the start of this season but after shipping three goals against Leicester on the opening weekend we suffered consecutive away defeats to Stoke and Liverpool.

The 4-0 demolition at Anfield before the international break saw our defence ripped apart and the Telegraph claim Wenger is giving serious consideration to reverting to a back four this weekend.

The newspaper says the boss and his coaching staff have been drilling the squad using both a back three and back four in training leading to the players believing we could be about to switch to a more traditional back four.

We’ll have to wait and see what Wenger decides to do against Bournemouth tomorrow but it could be a good opportunity to try out the back four again if that’s what he feels is going to be our long-term formation.

We’ve obviously started the campaign poorly but the defence isn’t our only problem as central midfield is an area we need to dramatically improve if we’re to compete this season.

The Ramsey/Xhaka combination offers very little protection to the defence so it won’t matter whether we’re playing a back three or four if we don’t sort out our midfield.
