Arsenal agree terms over record £92m signing, £250k-a-week contract also agreed
According to the Daily Star, Arsenal have agreed a £92m deal in principle with Monaco to sign Thomas Lemar in January and the attacker has also agreed terms over a five-year contract.
Lemar was our big transfer saga of the summer transfer window as we were strongly linked with the French international throughout the past few months.
It initially looked like a deal could be on the cards during the early stages of the summer but we failed to agree terms with Monaco and it looked like Lemar was staying in France.
The deal was resurrected as we approached deadline day with Arsene Wenger admitting he tried to sign Lemar as a potential replacement for Alexis Sanchez after agreeing to sell our Chilean super-star to Man City.
A proposed £92m deal eventually collapsed because there wasn’t enough time to complete the transfer as Lemar had to play for France on deadline day so Sanchez ended up staying at the Emirates.
However, the Daily Star claim Arsenal have already resurrected the Lemar deal and have agreed terms in principal over a £92m transfer during the January window.
The paper says Lemar has also agreed terms over a five-year contract worth £250,000-a-week making this a club record deal in every sense if we manage to pull it off.
Interestingly, the Daily Star suggest that any deal for Lemar isn’t dependent on Sanchez joining City this winter so it looks like we’re ready to let the 28-year-old see-out the final year of his contract.
Who knows how much truth there is behind this latest piece of transfer gossip but Wenger has already confirmed he’ll go back in for Lemar so it wouldn’t be a surprise if there is some foundation to the Daily Star’s report.
Obviously it would be a sensational signing if we could secure Lemar’s signature this winter as he’s one of the best young attackers in the world right now and I’d love to see him join Arsenal.
However, I personally think any potential deal will be dependent on Monaco’s progress in the Champions League. Why would Lemar want to leave mid-season if Monaco have booked their place in the knockout stages? And why would the Ligue 1 champions let him leave?
