Arsenal could miss out on key target as Liverpool close-in on £36m star

According to a report in the Express, Arsenal are at risk of missing out on the signature of Jean-Michael Seri with Liverpool believed to be closing-in on a deal for the Nice midfielder.

Arsene Wenger has confirmed he’s hoping to add further new recruits to his Arsenal squad before the end of the month with another midfielder understood to be a priority.

Seri has emerged as a prime target after enjoying an excellent season in France last year with his 7 goals and 9 assists helping Lyon finish third in Ligue 1.

The Guardian reported recently that Arsenal had held talks with the 26-year-old’s agent about a possible move to the Emirates as Wenger contemplated making a formal move for the midfielder.

However, before we could swoop for the Ivory Coast international, the boss has to first offload some of his fringe players with the likes of Jack Wilshere, Lucas Perez, Mathieu Debuchy, Kieran Gibbs and Joel Campbell all available for transfer.

It seems this delay in making our interest official is set to cost us as the Express are citing a report form TransferMarketWeb that claims Liverpool are now closing-in on a deal to sign Seri ahead of Arsenal.

The report says talks between Liverpool and Nice are progressing well and the Merseysiders are believed to be on the verge of sealing a deal worth just £20.5m – which is well short of Seri’s £36.6m release clause.

I have no idea why Nice would be willing to sell the player for less than his release fee but that’s what the newspaper is reporting and it would be a huge blow to miss out on Seri to Liverpool.

Jurgen Klopp has seemingly identified him as an alternative target after failing to persuade RB Leipzig to sell Naby Keita and I think he’d be a superb signing for them if they have won the race for his signature.

Let’s hope this report from the Express/Transfermarketweb is wide of the mark as I’d love to see Seri join Arsenal this summer.
