Arsenal lead race to sign highly-rated England youngster
According to a report in the Express, Arsenal are leading the race to sign highly-rated Sheffield Wednesday striker George Hirst.
The 17-year-old only joined Wednesday a year ago and has made just two appearances for the Championship outfit this season.
However, he’s impressed at youth level and it seems his potential has caught the eye of Arsenal scouts in recent months.
The Express claim that Arsene Wenger has sent his talent spotters to keep a check on Hirst on a regular basis and they’ve sent glowing reports back to the boss.
Hirst – who turns 18 next week – has already been capped at England under-18 level with 4 goals in his 5 caps so far, so it looks like he could have a bright future ahead of him.
I’m sure there will be a number of top clubs keeping an eye on the teenager but the Express claim that Arsenal are currently leading the race to snap him up next summer.
Wenger refused to bring in any significant new additions to the first team last month and instead took the opportunity to strengthen our under-23’s after snapping up Cohen Bramall from Hednesford Town.
It looks like the boss could be eyeing Hirst as his next addition to the youth set-up, however, we may have a tough time prising him away from Hillsborough as the kid is son of Wednesday legend David Hirst – who currently works at the club as a youth coach.
