Dutch keeper flies-in to London to begin trial at Arsenal
According to the Express, young Dutch goalkeeper Guy Smit is due to fly-in to London this week to begin a two week trial at Arsenal.
Smit is out of contract this summer after failing to agree terms over a new deal with Dutch top-flight side NEC Nijmegen – although he’s continued to train with the club in recent weeks.
The 20-year-old keeper has reportedly attracted interest from a number of clubs but the Express are citing reports coming from Holland that claim he’s now heading for Arsenal on a short-term deal.
The newspaper suggests that we’ve handed the stopper a two week trial and he’s expected to fly-in over the coming days to begin work at London Colney where he’s hoping to earn a permanent move.
When asked about his impending trial at Arsenal, Smit is quoted as saying by the Express:
“This opportunity I have to seize.”
The report says Smit has already had a trial at Championship club Brighton but they failed to secure a permanent deal allowing Arsenal time to make our move.
The promising keeper made 11 appearances for the NEC reserve side that season, keeping three clean sheets, but we’ll have to wait and see whether he does enough to convince Arsene Wenger that he deserves a permanent deal.
Obviously fans are more interested in the big-money transfers but improving our youth set-up is always important so it’s good to see the boss and his staff aren’t neglecting that side of things.
