Paul Merson offers his prediction ahead of Arsenal v Aston Villa

Former Arsenal winger Paul Merson has made his prediction ahead of Arsenal’s clash with Aston Villa on Sunday and he’s backing us to secure a comfortable three points.

We head in to the final Premier League game of the season sitting third in the table and two points adrift of Tottenham following last weekend’s 2-2 draw at Manchester City.

Having missed the chance to move level on points with our North London rivals after their defeat at home to Southampton, we now need to rely on relegated Newcastle beating them at St James’ Park to steal second spot.

A draw for Spurs would be enough as they have a +13 goal difference advantage over us and obviously we need to beat Aston Villa to stand any chance of making it 20 years in a row of finishing above our rivals.

Thankfully we face one of the worst sides in Premier League history and former winger Merson feels we’re going to ease to a comfortable 4-0 victory at the Emirates this weekend.

Writing in his column for Sky Sports, he said:

Arsenal v Aston Villa – Sunday, 3pm

I can’t think of anywhere worse for Villa to go on the last day. Arsenal have to win and I think it’s going to be a big win to end a disastrous season for Villa. They have 17 points and they won three of those on the first day of the season. There is zero chance they are going to spring a surprise at the Emirates.

PAUL PREDICTS: 4-0

We should win on Sunday, obviously, but I’m not sure it will be as resounding as Merson is predicting. We’ve looked poor in recent games and our team seems to think they can just turn up and win games like these.

The atmosphere at the Emirates is also likely to be pretty flat after a disappointing season so while I think we’ll still collect all three points, I’d be surprised if we win 4-0 this weekend.
