Arsenal handed boost as attacker agrees new bumper 5-year deal

Arsenal have been handed a major boost with the Mirror reporting that Alex Iwobi has agreed terms over a new long-term contract extension which will keep him at the club until 2021.
Iwobi has been with the club since joining our youth set-up as a seven year old and he made his breakthrough into the first team set-up earlier this season.
His potential led to boss Arsene Wenger handing the 19-year-old a new deal worth £10,000-a-week back in October which was due to run until 2019.
However, Iwobi has made huge strides since the turn of the year with the Nigerian international forcing his way in to Wenger’s starting eleven on a regular basis.
In fact, the teenager has started four of our last five games in all competitions and followed up his first goal for the club against Everton before the international break with another strike during our 4-0 win over Watford on Saturday.
His rich vein of form has now persuaded the boss to hand Iwobi improved terms and the Mirror claim the attacker has now agreed a new bumper five-year deal worth £30,000-a-week.
It’s obviously great news that Iwobi is set to commit his long-term future to the club as he’s a hugely exciting talent who will hopefully have a big future at Arsenal over the coming years.
However, I think £30,000-a-week is excessive for a player who’s only played seven times for the first team. His existing £10,000-a-week deal was more than fair given his experience and I worry that he might lose some of his motivation if we hand him this big contract so soon.
We’ve seen it in the past with players like Theo Walcott, who play out of their skin during contract negotiations only for their form to drop dramatically once the deal is signed.
Hopefully that won’t be the case with Iwobi as he’s made a big impact on the first team over the past few games and fingers crossed that’ll continue until the end of the season and beyond.
