33-year-old set to be handed Arsenal captaincy next season

According to the Mirror, Arsene Wenger is ready to hand Petr Cech the Arsenal captaincy next season despite the goalkeeper only being at the club for one year.

Mikel Arteta is still the clubs official captain but barely plays these days due to his on-going calf problems and with the Spaniard set to retire at the end of the season, the armband is up for grabs.

Per Mertesacker is the vice-captain and has been leading the team out for much of the season, so the German World Cup winner would be the obvious successor to Arteta.

However, the Mirror claims that Per may not be an automatic first choice regular next season and believe that Wenger will want to give the armband to someone who plays every week.

Step forward Petr Cech. The paper suggests that Arsene could be set to name the 33-year-old stopper as the new club captain next season as he’s made such a huge impact following his move from Chelsea last summer.

Cech is the stand-out choice in my opinion. He’s a leader both on and off the pitch and is a world class keeper who brings confidence to the team whenever he lines-up in between the sticks. He commands respect, so I for one hope that Arsene gives him the armband this summer.

Mertesacker would be a solid shout but as has been suggested, the 31-year-old may not be a first choice regular next season as Wenger may decide it’s time to go with Gabriel alongside Koscielny, so Cech is the obvious candidate to take over from Arteta.
